Thrunton

Map Reference:  NU074096

Situation and Character
The crag is situated in Thrunton Wood approximately 2½ km north of Coe Crag and commands an expansive view of Whittingham Vale to the Cheviots beyond. There are several independent buttresses spread across a steep and vegetated hillside and because of the difficulty in traversing that hillside, it is usually easier to use the forest track which runs above the crags to progress from buttress to buttress. It is not a popular crag and most of the routes may be dirty although West Buttress does see some traffic, is relatively clean and has a number of excellent routes.

Approaches and Access
Turn left off the A697 half a mile north of the cross-roads with the B6341 at a bend signposted Thrunton Wood and follow the road over the bridge at Rough Castles to park at the Forestry Commission car park. Continue along the road for a further 800 metres until a track is seen on the left. Follow the track west for about 2 kilometres until the crag is sighted stretching across the hillside to the right.
First time visitors to the crag are advised to locate West Buttress from which the other buttresses can most easily be located.
